Don’t you just love it when you get that random wave of motivation to start working out again? But then, just like clock work, it seems like there’s always a new obstacle, new excuses and new reasons not to workout. Staying motivated in your 30’s is not going to be any easier than it was in your 20’s, sorry to break it to ya. Were not young and invincible anymore, we have back pain, and get out of breath going up a couple flights of stairs. Which is exactly why it’s more important than ever to get our workouts in and stay active. So how do we keep that motivation flowing?
Tips to staying motivated as long as possible:
Here are things i’ve found have helped me stay motivated to workout consistently.
Set those goals
I know what you’re thinking “wow, ground breaking tip..” but let me break it down. We all have some kind of goal in mind. We want to be as skinny as we were in college, we want to look like Carrie Underwood, and we want any and everyone who stalks us on social media to be jealous as f*ck. But these goals are so broad and wont keep us motivated for long. I’m sure you can think of so many scenarios where you had a goal like that in mind, and did you reach that goal?
When setting goals you need to set a couple different goals, a long term goal, and even more important, short term goal(s). Because what is more motivating than hitting a goal?
Here are a couple examples of short and long term goals:
Short Term Goals
- Workout 3 times a week for 3 weeks in a row
- Be able to jog for 10 minutes without walking
- Fit into 1 size smaller in jeans
- Do 1 leg day a week
Long Term Goals
- Lose 40lbs
- Run a half marathon
- Wear my college jeans
- Legs like Carrie Underwood
Set a short term goal and crush it, set another short term goal and crush it, repeat this until you get to your long term goal. Write these goals down on paper to use as a visual, it really makes a difference!
Include a friend
Getting a friend involved will help keep you motivated and keep you accountable. The two of you will be able to bounce motivation off of eachother, when you’re feeling like your not in it, your friend will be able to get you back going strong and vice versa! Follow a workout routine and set goals together. Having a partner makes a big difference.
Join a fitness Facebook group
Motivation can come from seeing others going through the same things as you. Search for facebook groups focused on your goals, losing weight, getting strong, running a marathon ect. There are so many facebook groups with active members to keep you motivated. If we are going to doom scroll, we might as well see something that gets us motivated to workout. Get active in your chosen group, put your goals and routine out there! Sometimes speaking your goals out loud is what it takes for it to stick!
Buy a new workout outfit
I’m giving you permission to treat yourself, nothing is more motivating than a cute new workout outfit. Seriously, buy a cute new matching fit and tell me you’re not motivated to wear it and get a workout in. Same goes for a new pair of running shoes, we have to test them out and show them off. This goes hand in hand with the phrase “look good feel good”. If your go to is a old band tee and leggings that are probably see through when you bend over because they’ve been washed 100 times, you’re not going to feel very motivated to put those on and get your workout in. I have a lot of favs that don’t break the bank, I love this basic workout tank on amazon and these leggings are so flattering for the tummy and booty!
Hire a trainer
Working out in your 30s is so difficult because we’re just plain busy, we have careers and families and need to make the most of our time! Hiring a trainer will be so beneficial at this stage of your life. A trainer takes out all the guesswork on your end and gives you exactly what you need to succeed. An online trainer will be a total game changer when it come to keeping you motivated when you’re just not feeling it. Trainers will know how much is too much and will know when you need that lil motivational push! Give yourself a little break and let them figure it out for you, all you need to do is show up for yourself!
